In Milan, Italy’s hub of finance and fashion, smokers now face fines for lighting up on city streets or in crowded public spaces, following the implementation of the country’s strictest smoking ban on Wednesday.
Violators of the new rule in this polluted northern city could be fined between 40 and 240 euros ($41 to $249), a penalty that has drawn mixed reactions from residents.
“I find this measure excessive. If it’s about smoking indoors, I agree because it can be bothersome and unhealthy” said Myrian Illiano, a 21-year-old sales clerk, in an interview with AFP.
