Sri Lankan Police Raise Concerns Over Hiru TV Hiring Underworld Figure

Sri Lanka’s Police Headquarters has issued a formal warning to Hiru Media regarding the recruitment of a former underworld figure as a journalist, citing his involvement in multiple criminal activities. Reports indicate that the individual has participated in police raids and special operations despite his extensive criminal record.

According to police sources, the individual, a resident of Balangoda known by aliases such as “Kalu Malli,” “Army Roshan,” “SF Kalu,” and “Roshan,” has been convicted and faces ongoing legal proceedings for various crimes, including:

  • Assault with a sword, resulting in a court sentence.
  • Extortion of Rs. 50,000, leading to a conviction.
  • Possession of an unlicensed firearm, for which he was sentenced.
  • Ongoing court cases for illegal possession of a hand grenade and heroin.
  • Impersonation of a CID officer to rob gold jewelry.
  • Attempted murder using a firearm.

Authorities have classified him under the country’s registered criminal database, linking him to organized crime networks. He is also a former member of the Sri Lankan military, adding another layer of concern regarding his infiltration into media operations.

The police have emphasized that his presence at official police briefings and operations poses a serious security risk.
