Instagram Announced New Video Editing App ‘Edits’ as TikTok Faced Uncertainty

Instagram has unveiled a new video editing app called Edits, positioning itself as a stronger contender in the video content space. The announcement coincided with TikTok briefly going offline due to a federal ban, a move that could disrupt the platform’s dominance.

Set to launch in February, Edits promises a “full suite of creative tools,” according to Instagram head Adam Mosseri. The app will allow users to store drafts, edit videos, and add advanced features such as green screens, overlays, and transitions. Meta Platforms Inc., Instagram’s parent company, aims to provide creators with a comprehensive platform to produce and enhance their content.

Meanwhile, Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) is doubling down on its video strategy. On Sunday, the platform began rolling out a new video tab in its app for U.S. users, calling it “an immersive home for videos.” The move is part of X’s broader effort to carve out a presence in live streaming, video podcasts, and long-form interviews.

Instagram’s timing is notable. As TikTok’s future in key markets like the U.S. remains uncertain, Instagram—already popular for its Reels feature—could become a go-to option for creators seeking new tools and platforms. By introducing Edits, Instagram is not only expanding its video capabilities but also capitalizing on a moment of potential disruption in the creator economy.
