Sri Lanka’s Minister of Energy Pledges Affordable Energy Solutions and Focus on Renewables

Sri Lanka, burdened with the highest energy costs in the region, is set to undergo a transformation in its energy sector under the leadership of the new government. Minister of Energy, Engineer Kumara Jayakody, has emphasized the government’s commitment to making energy more affordable while paving the way for renewable energy development.

Speaking at a meeting held at the Ministry of Energy, the Minister stated, “We are a country with the highest energy costs in the region, and the new government’s aim is to change that situation and provide energy at a reasonable price that can be afforded. If the country is to develop, that is what we need to do. We have high hopes, especially for renewable energy.”

The Minister assured private investors of a conducive environment to participate in energy generation projects, promising a “win-win approach” that balances the interests of the government and investors. “As a government that understands the values and expectations of investors, we will provide prompt solutions to their problems and work to achieve the country’s energy goals,” he added.

The meeting focused on the progress of medium and large-scale renewable energy projects under the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority. Representatives from renewable energy institutions highlighted challenges faced, project progress, and other key issues.

It was revealed that these renewable energy initiatives have the potential to contribute over 500 megawatts to the national grid within the next two years, showcasing significant capacity growth.

Minister Jayakody directed government officials to collaborate with relevant institutions to swiftly resolve identified issues and make necessary policy decisions to accelerate progress.

The government’s proactive stance on renewable energy is expected to play a pivotal role in achieving energy affordability and sustainability, marking a critical step in the country’s development journey.
