UK Imposed Sanctions On Karuna Amman And Others

The United Kingdom has imposed sanctions on four Sri Lankans for alleged human rights abuses during Sri Lanka’s civil war.

The sanctions are reportedly imposed on former Chief of Defence Staff General Shavendra Silva, former Navy Commander Admiral of the Fleet Wasantha Karannagoda and former Army Commander General Jagath Jayasuriya.

In addition, the United Kingdom has also imposed sanctions on former LTTE leader Vinayagamoorthy Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman.

Accordingly, the individuals concerned will be banned from travelling to the United Kingdom and will also be prohibited from accumulating assets in the country.

The government has informed that any assets they may have in the United Kingdom will also be frozen.

The UK government’s official website reported that the sanctions were imposed for allegations of human rights violations, including extrajudicial killings, during the civil war in Sri Lanka.

The UK has stated that it is committed to investigating and punishing those responsible for human rights violations committed during the civil war.

The report further indicated that the UK is working with the new government to improve human rights in Sri Lanka and appreciates their commitment to national unity.
