Sri Lanka Forms Committee to Assess Impact of US Reciprocal Tariff Policy

Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has appointed a high-level committee to evaluate the potential economic implications of the new reciprocal tariff system introduced by US President Donald Trump. The committee will conduct an in-depth study and provide recommendations to the Sri Lankan government on how to mitigate any challenges arising from the policy shift.

The panel comprises key government officials, including the Secretary to the Ministry of Finance, the Governor of the Central Bank, the Chairman of the Board of Investment, the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Export Development Board, and the Director General of Economic Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Additionally, the committee includes economic and industry experts such as Senior Economic Advisor to the President Duminda Hulugamuwa, Chief Economic Policy Advisor to the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce Shiran Fernando, as well as prominent business leaders Ashroff Omar, Sherad Amalean, and Saif Jafferjee.

As global trade dynamics continue to shift, Sri Lanka’s initiative reflects broader concerns among nations about the potential economic fallout of the US policy. The committee’s findings are expected to shape Sri Lanka’s response and trade strategies in the evolving international landscape.
