Japan Grants Million Yen to Improve Sri Lanka’s Waste Management

Japan has extended a 300 million Yen (approx. LKR 565 million) grant to Sri Lanka under the ‘Clean Sri Lanka’ initiative to enhance waste management infrastructure. The agreement was signed today at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo by Japan’s Parliamentary Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs, Sayama (Ikuina) Akiko, and Sri Lanka’s Finance Ministry Secretary, Mahinda Siriwardana, in the presence of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

The grant will fund 28 garbage compactors to improve waste collection in the Western, Northern, and Eastern Provinces. Vice-Minister Sayama praised Sri Lanka’s anti-corruption measures, stating they have boosted global investor confidence.

President Dissanayake expressed gratitude for Japan’s ongoing support, including its role in Sri Lanka’s debt restructuring. He also requested further cooperation in public transport development and employment opportunities for Sri Lankans in Japan.

The event was attended by senior Sri Lankan officials and Japanese diplomats, reinforcing strong bilateral ties between the two nations.
