The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act of 2025, a bill that seeks to ban biological males from competing in women’s and girls’ sports. The legislation, introduced by Rep. Greg Steube, R-Florida, aims to amend Title IX to define “sex” based on biological characteristics at birth.
The bill passed 218-206, with all Republicans and two Democrats voting in favor. It would withhold federal funding from educational institutions allowing biological males to compete in female athletics. Supporters argue it ensures fairness in women’s sports, while opponents claim it could lead to discrimination and harassment.
The bill now heads to the Senate, where it needs 60 votes to overcome a filibuster. President-elect Donald Trump has pledged to take action on this issue if the legislation fails.
