The government has announced plans to resume vehicle imports starting in January, a decision that has been positively received by the Ceylon Vehicle Importers Association.
Mr. Indika Sampath Meranchige, president of the association, addressed concerns over rumored tax hikes associated with vehicle imports. He stated that the claims of a staggering 600% tax on imported vehicles are unfounded and misleading. “If such exorbitant taxes were to be implemented, it would deter consumers from purchasing vehicles,” he asserted.
Meranchige also highlighted that certain car dealership owners might be perpetuating these rumors to drive sales of their existing stock. He reassured the public that once vehicle imports resume, the currently inflated prices will likely stabilize and return to more reasonable levels.
