Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith announced that the leader of the country has made a promise to reveal the truth behind the 2019 Easter Sunday attack. He emphasized that investigations into the matter have already begun, and assured that he will closely monitor the progress to ensure that the promise is fulfilled.
Speaking on the issue, Cardinal Ranjith criticized certain parties for remaining silent on the investigation process, accusing them of hindering the work but not raising questions when those parties were in parliament. He highlighted the long-standing lack of accountability and transparency regarding the findings of the commissions established to investigate the attack.
“They have been silent for so long without asking anything about what we are doing. These people have obstructed our work without saying a word in parliament. Now, suddenly, there is talk—where are the commission reports? A new batch of so-called heroes has emerged. They don’t matter. There were two committees appointed by the previous government, and those reports were handed over to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference” Cardinal Ranjith remarked.
He further expressed skepticism about the need for new committees when the recommendations of the Presidential Commission on the Easter attack already existed. According to him, those recommendations included legal actions against two high-ranking officials currently serving in the government, as suggested by the committee itself.
Cardinal Ranjith reaffirmed his stance that the investigation should not be manipulated or controlled by the government, stating, “We are not ready to let the investigation of the Easter attack be passed from one hand to the other as the government wishes. We want to know the truth.”
The Cardinal reiterated that the country’s leader has promised to initiate a thorough investigation, and he, along with the Catholic community, is waiting with vigilance for the leader to honor that commitment.
