Chad’s Ruling Party Secures Majority While Opposition Boycott

Provisional results indicate that Chad’s ruling party has secured two-thirds of the seats in the recent legislative election, which many opposition groups boycotted.

The Dec. 29 election marks the country’s transition to constitutional rule, over three years after Mahamat Idriss Deby seized power following the sudden death of his father, long-time leader Idriss Deby Itno.

Deby’s Patriotic Salvation Movement won 124 out of 188 seats in the National Assembly, with a voter turnout of 51.56%.

This election, which also included municipal and regional polls, was Chad’s first in over a decade.

However, opposition groups, including Succes Masra’s Transformateurs party, boycotted the vote, citing concerns over bias and a lack of transparency—claims the government has denied.
