PM Modi To Visit Sri Lanka On April 5

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Sri Lanka on April 5, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake announced in Parliament on Friday.

The visit will focus on finalizing agreements made during President Dissanayake’s previous trip to New Delhi, a process that was highlighted by Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath last week.

Coinciding with PM Modi’s arrival, construction on the Sampur Power Plant in Trincomalee’s eastern port district is scheduled to begin. President Dissanayake emphasized that the Indian leader’s visit reflects Sri Lanka’s stability.

Additionally, the two nations have reached an agreement to establish solar power plants in Sri Lanka, Health Minister Nalinda Jayathissa stated. The project will be developed in two phases—50 MW in the first stage and 70 MW in the second—through a joint venture between the Ceylon Electricity Board and India’s National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC).

Originally, NTPC had planned to build a coal power plant at Sampur, but the new agreement shifts the focus to renewable energy, transforming the site into a solar power station.
