Apple has temporarily halted its Apple Intelligence news feature following widespread criticism over inaccurate and misleading summaries. Introduced with the iOS 18.2 update, the AI-driven tool condensed notifications from news apps into brief overviews but faced backlash for providing false information, prompting complaints from news organizations like the BBC and frustrated users.
One notable instance of misinformation involved the feature inaccurately summarizing an article by stating that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been arrested, while the actual report mentioned only an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court.
In response, Apple announced that the feature will be disabled in the upcoming beta updates for iOS 18.3 and macOS 15.3 as they work on improvements. To enhance transparency, Apple plans to differentiate AI-generated summaries by displaying them in italics, making it clear when content is produced by artificial intelligence.
Apple has emphasized its commitment to improving the reliability of AI-generated content and intends to relaunch the feature once the issues have been addressed. This move reflects the company’s efforts to maintain trust and ensure the accuracy of information delivered to its users.
